The New York Jets announced today that Gary Marangi of Patchogue-Medford High School has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, he will receive $1,000 to benefit the school s football program and he will be presented with a certificate from the Jets.
The award, in its 18th year, is given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Marangi graduated from Boston College with a degree in marketing in 1974 in addition to playing four years on the football team. He started at quarterback jobs beginning in his junior season, playing in the East-West and North-South all-star games his senior year. Marangi was the second player ever drafted in the World Football jobs League and was selected in the third round of the 1974 NFL Draft by Buffalo. He played four seasons in the NFL, with the Bills from 1974-76 and his final year with the Browns in 1977.
Marangi was as an assistant for the Patch-Medford Raiders from 2001 06. In 2002, with Marangi calling the offensive plays, the Raiders won the Suffolk County jobs Division I championship and won a Long Island Division I title. He moved on to coach Connetquot High School from 2008-10 and also led them to a Suffolk County Division I championship in addition to a Long Island Division I title in 2008. Marangi has held the job as dean of students at Patchogue-Medford High School since 2001. On Friday, Patchogue-Medford defeated the William jobs Floyd Colonials, two-time defending Division I champions, 31-7. The Raiders will go on the road to face the Ward Melville Patriots on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m.
